A few years ago I became very interested in why people commit suicide and when I came across an article about 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher – The author of the book from which Netflix original series gets its name – my interest was piqued even further. This led me down a rabbit hole of research into what might cause a person to choose suicide and I was saddened by what I read.

The series does an excellent job of portraying the many reasons why a person might become so deeply depressed that they consider ending their life: bullying, sexual assault, drug abuse (among other things). It also does an excellent job of showing how all these things are interconnected – depression may lead someone to drugs which could then lead them into becoming suicidal; or being assaulted can make it difficult for a victim to trust anyone enough to confide in them about their struggles.
