Sigurd. Ragnar. Erik the Red. Names that conjure images of fearless, fierce warriors with a thirst for battle and conquest. And while these names are great in their own right, we can’t help but notice how similar they all sound to each other – as well as being fairly clichéd when it comes to naming your son after a Viking name…

Freyja was the daughter of Njord and sister to Freyr, god of fertility. When I was a kid, my teacher read us the story of Erik the Red and his adventures to Vinland. It felt like she was telling me about some old character from mythology – not someone who actually existed. But this is what they are teaching kids now! The Vikings were a real people with their own heroes, villains, traditions, stories.. And then there’s all those stereotypes that have been etched in our brains since day one: aggressive warriors; blue-faced barbarians; horned helmets. What can you do?
