I’ve been fascinated by ants for as long as I can remember. I used to think a lot about ants as a kid and always imagined I would someday be the one who could figure out how to control them. That didn’t happen for me, but now I’m a lot more curious about them. Not only because we’re fascinated with our own species, but because they’re fascinating to me as a human.
I find it interesting that ants are more interesting to me than ants as individuals. Ive always thought humans were just a bunch of cute creatures that you could tell apart, but I was wrong that time. Ive realized that everyone is just a bunch of different species of ants. Like cockroaches, theyve been known to attack humans, but theyre not that scary.
In fact, ants are known as one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. They can bite, sting, or fly at will, and they have a high degree of intelligence, although they often rely on a complex language to guide them.
As a person who has lived in a building for a while, I often get curious about how ants live. Are they really that smart? Is there something wrong with me? You know my answer: I dont’ know, but I might be wrong. I mean, if I’m wrong, then I might be a little weird.
Ants are one of the most common and most studied creatures in science. But despite this, there are still a lot of things about the ants that are still mystery. For instance, I have never been able to figure out just how they get food. It’s like they aren’t getting it from plants. It seems that ants can only take and eat a single kind of food.
Thats what my colleague Jim Dyer has been puzzled by since the discovery of the first ant colony in the 1800s. He has some theories that sound plausible, but you cant take them at face value. For example, he has an interesting theory that ants might be able to take two kinds of food at a time. Jim thinks that the way ants are able to do this is because they have special cells called olfactory cells.
Actually, Jim is wrong. The only ant species that has this ability is the parasitic species of ants called social wasps. The only other species with this ability is a beetle called a hymenopteran. These two species can only take two kinds of food at a time.
This is why Jim’s theory might be wrong. As we saw in the trailer, the social wasps can be a bit overzealous (just like the ant), and sometimes they can kill their own young. The hymenopteran can only take two kinds of food at a time.
The way Jims theory is written it sounds like the social wasps are the only ones that can take two kinds of food at a time, and the hymenopteran only takes one at a time. That’s wrong. According to Jim, ants take two kinds of food at a time, and hymenopterans can’t take two varieties of food at a time, but they can mix and match.
My theory is that Jims theory is actually correct. The social wasps are the only wasp species that can take two different types of food at a time. They can mix and match so that they can eat two different types of food at a time, but they can only take two kinds of food at a time.
