This blog post focuses on the age of Jesus at the time he was baptized. It discusses his baptism, which is a requirement for all Jews to show that they were repentant. The post also goes into why Jesus would have been baptized and whether or not he might have put it off until later in life.
In Jewish tradition, people are required to be baptised when they are 30 years old if they want to high priest (or other sacred positions). This rule may suggest that this date just marks some arbitrary point before adulthood but there’s more significance than you’d think: during biblical times, men typically married women who were 18-20 years old and children were often born within three months of marriage; thus, we can make the reasonable assumption that Jesus was probably betwixt 18 and 20 years old at the time of his baptism.
So, what’s a good angle here? As I said in my last post on this subject (Jesus’ Age At The Time Of His Baptism), it seems like an age-old question where you can find evidence to support any side– but one possibility is looking into how much growing up he had left to do before adulthood. So we could ask if there were other milestones, besides being baptized, that might have reflected him not having reached adulthood yet or whether society just doesn’t care about things for children until they turn 30.

It’s hard not to have an opinion about Jesus’ age when he was baptized– whether it should be computed using his years, months and days as calculated by Jewish tradition, counting from conception (as used by early Christian scholars), or based on how much growing up he had left before adulthood. But going back to Christianity’s beginnings helps us understand that there are many different ways we can calculate this number. For example, if we follow the New Testament accounts where Jesus is said to be 30-years old when he began his ministry, then he would have been baptised around the year 27 or 28.
Jesus’s age at the time of his baptism is a topic that can’t be ignored– but it also depends on how you define “baptism.” If we’re counting from conception as was done by early Christian scholars, Jesus’ age when he was baptized in water would have been about six months old. But if we follow Jewish tradition and count years, months and days- where there are no leap years- then Jesus may not have reached puberty before being baptized (which happened after 30) – which could make him anywhere from an infant up to two decades older than the typical person who might be baptized today!

The Baptism of Jesus and the Birth of John The Baptist – George Frederic Handel (a) {christian composer}
* In this scene from Christ’s life, we find him at age thirty, about to be baptized by John in Jordan. He had grown up as a carpenter in Nazareth with his mother Mary and father Joseph. ** ** **I was not born on December 25th or January 06th; I do not know when I was born.* John’s baptism is an important event because it marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, and the start of his journey to Jerusalem where he will be crucified.
In this scene from Christ’s life, we find him at age thirty, about to be baptized by John in Jordan. He had grown up as a carpenter in Nazareth with his mother Mary and father Joseph. John’s baptism is an important event because it marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, and the start of his journey to Jerusalem where he will be crucified. For more information on when I was born please see The Gospel According to Luke chapter one verses 26-27: “Now there was a man named Zechariah who belonged to the priestly division called Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly.”
There are two points to make here about Jesus’ age at this point in his life: First, it is not unusual for someone to be baptized when they come into adulthood (John was baptizing many people who lived around 30 years old) or near their deathbed as a sign that they’re starting anew with God; Second, more than likely John would have been older than thirty-years-old himself when he first started preaching and baptism because he grew up in Elizabeth’s generation. If we know anything from scripture about Mary – she had no children until after she became engaged to Joseph so there was a lot of waiting around. We also know that she was probably an older woman when Jesus was born because her first child with Joseph would have been six months old and the Bible tells us Mary had to wait three years before she became pregnant again- so it’s possible for her to have been as much as ten years old at the time of Jesus’ birth, which is why some people believe he could be in his early twenties by this point. John baptized many who lived up until thirty but we can’t say whether or not he did any baptisms after that age – although from scripture John preached his whole life including being close to deathbeds and never mentioned doing another baptism if he didn’t do them all through his adulthood.
