The Everly Brothers are one of the most influential and successful bands in rock ‘n’ roll history. They have had more than 30 top 40 hits, including “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up! Little Susie,” “Bird Dog” and many others. The brothers, born in 1937 as Phil and Don Everly were singing together since they were just boys. They started performing on the radio at age 11 and by age 13 had their first record contract with Cadence Records.

Phil died of lung cancer in January 2014, which left only one surviving member of this powerhouse duo: his brother Don. The pair was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once for themselves as individuals and again last year as a group (along with Isaac Hayes.) This year has been an especially difficult time because it marks 50 years ago that the two released “Cathy’s Clown.” It is considered to be their most important song ever written not only due to its place in rock ‘n’ roll history, but because the song was penned by Phil and Don together.

Don is still alive of course – he just celebrated his 75th birthday this past June with a concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC. I had never seen him before, but it turns out that while they were brothers first and foremost, their on-stage chemistry was something to behold: all during the two hours or so of music (including hits like “Walk Right Back,” “Bird Dog” and “Cathy’s Clown”) there wasn’t a single moment where one brother would take over as lead singer from another; instead they shared vocal duties more than 50 years ago when they recorded their first albums for RCA Records.

The lyrics are so thoughtful and poignant: “I’ve got a lot of love for you, but I don’t know how to show it.” Can anyone relate? It’s the most well-written song about unrequited romantic love that I know of. There is also their classic hit said be When Will I Be Loved where there was such a catchy sound in this music video too – do you enjoy watching any other music videos on Youtube or elsewhere online ? Thats what Im doing sometimes while listening to my favorite songs.

It’s a nice and lighthearted song about a boy who is dating Cathy, but she always smokes cigarettes. He tried to break up with her, but it didn’t work. She also has this crazy family of hers that makes life difficult for him as well! It was such an enjoyable video to watch because we could see the humorous side of things in his relationship. His impressions were spot on too – maybe I should try doing that one day?
