I hear music all the time. Whether I am at work or relaxing in my house, it’s always there. Sometimes, when I’m feeling really good and happy, it sounds like beautiful birds chirping outside my window as the sun shines through the trees. Other times, when I’m sad or sick of life for a moment, that same sound is haunting me with its dissonance and loneliness. Music has many different meanings and effects on people – but what does it mean to you?

I guess my relationship with music is a strange one. It’s always been there and I never questioned its importance or how much it means to me – but now, when I think of all the moments in life that are remembered by songs, it becomes so clear just how important this part of my life really is. Music has helped make every moment more meaningful for me because without it, those times would have felt empty. Whenever I hear certain melodies from some oldies song on the radio as I’m driving home from work late at night or playing one of my favorite artists while cooking dinner, the memories come flooding back like they were yesterday instead of years ago..either way, music makes each day feel fuller than any other time before. I hear the music in my head. I feel it, too. My pulse quickens and all of me wants to dance just for a moment before reality sets back in. Sometimes, it’s so loud that words can’t penetrate the foggy veil over my mind until hours later. The lyrics are already imprinted on my brain like lines from some familiar poem we forget as soon as we memorize them; they echo through us at night when sleep is elusive and during our waking moments when there’s little else left than traffic lights turning red then green again to remind us where we are supposed to be going next..
