Iron is one of the most important metals in history. Initially, Iron was very scarce and difficult to find, but as people found out how to use it, they began using it for everything from weapons to building materials. One of the most common uses of iron today is in steel production..

The process is actually very simple when you break it down into steps: a solid iron reacts with gaseous oxygen, converting both substances into new materials – one being solid iron(ii) oxide, and the other remaining as gas. The downside is that this reaction does produce some heat while still in progress; so be sure you handle molten metal with extreme care!
