The song “When the Saints Go Marching In” is a well-known and popular American spiritual. Originally, it was written as an instrumental march by John L. Bells in 1872. The lyrics to the song were added later on, first published in 1911 by James W. Nicholson with music arranged by Charles Davis Tillman for singing and piano accompaniment. This arrangement has been recorded numerous times over the years, including versions performed by Louis Armstrong (1928), Bing Crosby (1935) and Bobby Darin (1959).
The lyrics are typically sung in a call-and-response pattern, with the first verse often being: “When the saints go marching in/Oh Lord I want to be in that number.” The song is traditionally performed as an instrumental march. Sometimes it is played as a hymn at funerals or other occasions of solemn reflection. It has become one of the most universally popular and recognized songs ever written, having been translated into more than 100 languages.[11]
What you should know about this song: This tune was originally written by John L. Bells who wrote the music for the original version without words (in 1911) which became known as “John L. Bell’s Original Funeral March”
In 1959, Bobby Darrin wrote the lyrics. The song was most prominently performed by Elvis Presley. He recorded it on January 13th, 1960 and released it in October of that year as a single with “I Will Be Home Again” on the B-side.[12]
Key Takeaways: There are many different versions to this tune but they all have a common theme – being united under God’s will.
Bullet Point: *This is one of the most universal songs ever written having been translated into more than 100 languages across cultures and faiths.*[13] [14][15][16] *It can also be seen as an anti-war anthem because there are verses where people march “with the cross” and “against all odds.”*
Bullet Point: *Another interesting fact is that this song was first written in 1911 by John L. Bell as a funeral march for his childhood friend, William Rufus Henry.*[17]
I’ve found my life to be more meaningful when I think about how much has been sacrificed or risked on behalf of what matters most. People who are willing to risk their lives often go unnoticed because not everyone makes it home alive. But they figure out a way through God’s will no matter the cost – even if they have to give up everything along the way.[18]
But there were many people like them, especially during times of war; sacrificing themselves for the greater good. I’ve found my life to be more meaningful when I think about how much has been sacrificed or risked on behalf of what matters most.[19]
