Some scenes from his novels are set in London but there has never been any mention of the city or other places outside Midsomerton’s borders. His crime solving skills seemed to be confined to these boundaries, so it was no surprise that he left when the series abandoned its small town setting for bigger towns and villages throughout England like Brighton. It’s worth noting though that some references have been made to locations such as Brighton, where Hopkins’ characters would visit occasionally during their episodes instead of always remaining at home with Mr Barnaby and Mrs Jones who adopted them with open arms after they were orphaned as children (or so we think).

As he watched the people in their various positions it was easy to see how they were feeling about each other and what might happen next. His skill at observation was essential to solving baffling crimes; this is probably why his eyes were keenly focused on Mr Barnaby who seemed less animated then usual with Mrs Jones by his side wearing her customary rueful smile that expressed she had long ago resigned herself to the hopelessness of dealing with him as well as those around them. Suddenly he saw a woman walking quickly out onto the road from behind an open door and start running towards Midsomerton High Street where everyone gathered for events such as these. He couldn’t help but think she was running away, although he couldn’t tell if she saw him.

As a detective sergeant for the Midsomer Murders it’s not unusual to come across some stranger at an event or taking part in one of their many community initiatives; but on this occasion the woman looked like she had been crying and her face showed fear and confusion which made Hopkins suspect that something terrible might have happened inside. He decided to follow behind while keeping his eye out for flashing lights from any approaching vehicles before following into what seemed likely to be another murder case.
