why is creon the antagonist in the play antigone

Creon is the antagonist in Sophocles’ Antigone because he upholds a law that Antigone violates, thereby causing conflict. Creon believes the laws of Thebes trump any other form of justice and so argues with his niece when she asserts her right to do what her conscience dictates. Ultimately, Creon ignores pity for Polynices – who was killed by citizens while on campaign against Thebes – preferring instead to respect his brother Eteocles’ wishes to have him buried as an enemy outside city limits. In this way, both characters are antagonists: one through their actions; another through inaction.”

The Enigmatic Antagonist: Creon – Why is Creon the Protagonist?

What does it mean when someone is called an “antagonist”?

The word ‘antagonist’ comes from a Greek term meaning someone who is against the protagonist, usually in some form of competition. This can be physical or mental – it just depends on what kind of story we’re talking about. In Antigone, Creon is an antagonist because he upholds law that Antigone violates and also ignores pity for Polynices – who was killed by citizens while on campaign against Thebes – preferring instead to respect his brother Eteocles’ wishes.” “In conclusion,” “Consequently,” and “But also..” (numbering each sentence) : 0

– When Haemon confronts Ismene about what’s happening to their family, she can’t bring herself to tell him the truth.

– When Creon found out that Antigone disobeyed his law, he ordered her execution – which is why Ismene’s immortal soul will be condemned for eternity.

– After some hesitation and a talk with Haemon, Creon has decided not to execute Antigone after all but only because of society’s opinion about women in power who don’t follow orders from their husbands or fathers.” “In conclusion,” “Consequently,” and “But also..” (numbering each sentence) : 0

Creon thinks it is less important if people live under tyranny as long as they are living and dying well? What does this say about the society of Thebes?

– Society in the play Antigone is one that has a power struggle between men and women. Men think it’s important to be able to control others but they don’t really care about people living well; this contrast with society thinking that life should matter most which given Ismene’s plea for mercy at the end, maybe she agrees too.

The sentence “Creon thinks it is less important if people live under tyranny as long as they are living and dying well?” seems redundant because you already said he doesn’t care about how good their lives are going or not when he executes her so I would cut it out. What does Creon want then? He wants everyone else to die except his daughter and the one he loves, Eurydice.

What Creon wants is to have everyone die except his daughter Antigone and her husband Haemon in order to punish them for their treason because they defied him by burying Polyneices when it was against law. He’s still a tyrant who cares about himself more than anything else even though society has this idea that life should be what matters most; look at how Ismene asks mercy for Antigones’ sake but he doesn’t care in the end which leads me to believe she might agree too? Thebes can see Creons tyranny through his absolute rule with no compassion or restraint on those under him. I’m not really sure if there are any other points you could make I’m sorry 🙁

Themes: tyranny, family, betrayal.

So far the themes are that Creon is a tyrant who rules with no compassion or restraint and he cares about himself more than anything else even though society has this idea that life should be what matters most; look at how Ismene asks mercy for Antigones’ sake but he doesn’t care in the end which leads me to believe she might agree too? Haemon’s revenge against him also ties into his thirst for power because he wants all of Thebes under his rule instead of just one small section. And Polyneices’ death caused such turmoil and some people thought it was tyrannical on Creons behalf when really everyone wanted him dead.

Significance: This play by Sophocles tells us something very important about human nature, we often have a natural instinct to be good but the more we are put in positions that make it difficult for us, the easier it becomes to be cruel.

The Enigmatic Antagonist: Creon

One of the central figures from Sophocles’ famous play is Thebes’ King and Father-In-Law Creon. Most people think he might not actually be an antagonist because sometimes as humans we need someone who will tell us what can or cannot happen so they don’t get hurt by others but also just like how some places adopt law enforcement officers, society needs them too which means he’s necessary and does not always mean you should view him as evil. So why then is Creon considered one of the most important antagonists in the play? Out human nature, we often have a natural instinct to be good but the more we are put in positions that make it difficult for us, the easier it becomes to be cruel. This is shown through Creon and Antigone’s relationship because he tries his best not to let her disobey him with what she thinks should happen but as he starts talking about how bad things will get if they break laws/rules, he threatens her which makes her dig in even more on why this needs to happen no matter what anyone says. As you can see from their conversation, both of them want whats best for Thebes (different ways) and by being kinder when speaking vs threatening someone who doesn’t think like you
