When I started writing about mouse books, I assumed I wanted to write about mouse books. I don’t. I wanted to write about the characters who inhabit them. I wanted to write about the ways in which mouse books have been constructed.
There’s the big question of what “mouse book” actually means. I’m going to suggest that the word refers to a literary form which has evolved from the book itself. A more concise definition might be “a collection of books used to represent the lives of a mouse.
Okay. So in that definition, I guess we have to conclude that mice are the literary form of the mouse book. What about this other definition? The idea behind a mouse is to represent the lives of a mouse in a book. Okay.
the mouse book is a literary form that has evolved from the book itself. Okay, so it means a book which has been used to represent the lives of a mouse. But what about this other definition, The idea behind a mouse is to represent the lives of a mouse in a book. I guess that says it all.
The way I like to look at it is that our lives are books. I write books, you read books, so the mouse book, with its focus on the lives of mice, represents the lives of a mouse, and it is a form of literature. The fact that I, a mouse, am able to write and read books doesn’t mean that we, mice, should have to only read books. We’re humans, after all.
You know what’s funny though? I’ve actually noticed people making the same argument about books and mouse books. They say that the writer must be a mouse for his work to have any merit, but then go on to say that a mouse book is just as valid as a human book. The only thing the two are even equal in value is the level of skill and skillfulness the writer possesses. My argument is that it’s a silly argument really.
To me, this argument seems to be about more than just the quality of the writing. I say this because we all know that a lot of human books are written by people who are just as lazy as we are. But if we look at the human language, even the best of the best, the world is filled with people who are just as lazy as we are. So I say that the argument that a mouse book is just as valid as a human book is silly.
I’m with you. I know a lot of people enjoy reading a book with a lot of fancy words. But I think most people love reading a book with an interesting plot, interesting characters, and engaging action. I think most people like novels.
It does not follow that we can’t like a book with the same plot, characters, and engaging action. But we have to be careful to not overstate the case. A lot of people might say that a book is just as valid as a mouse book, but I think most people only read the ones with the most entertaining plot and characters. So I say we shouldn’t be so eager to judge a book by its plots.
I think a lot of people will say that a book can be just as valid as a mouse book, but that is a bit of a strawman argument. A mouse book is just a book, a mouse is a mouse, a book is a book, and so on. There is no perfect book, only the perfect mouse book. I think our job here is to be as honest as possible, but not to give up our first born.
