I’m not sure if I have Restless Leg Syndrome, but my feet are constantly rubbing together. It’s a reflex – and makes me feel like I need to take off all the time. My mother was in her 40s when she developed it too, which may be why it seems so common for people of middle age.
If you’ve heard about RLS before then you know that there is no cure.. and while there are many treatment options out there, they’re inconvenient at best. Medications can help with some of the symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS), including leg cramps or spasm-like sensations on one side of your body — often called periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS). But before you start taking any medications, a doctor should give the okay.
To manage your symptoms of RLS without medication:
– Get up and stretch every 15 minutes to relieve spasm-like sensations in your legs or arms for five minutes. Or take brief breaks from sitting by standing up, walking around, and stretching out tight muscles. – Try not to cross your legs while seated as this can aggravate leg cramps that may be caused by RLS. For long car trips or plane flights when it’s not possible to walk around during flight delays — bring along an inflatable travel pillow or cushion (such as one made of memory foam) so you’re more comfortable with crossed legs and feet resting on something supportive like a pillow.
– Stay hydrated to stay alert and avoid dehydration, which can worsen symptoms of RLS. – Exercise regularly as a way to strengthen your muscles and improve sleep quality. But don’t exercise too close to bedtime or you may have trouble falling asleep because the increased heart rate stimulates the brain’s alpha waves — which are associated with wakefulness rather than relaxation and drowsiness.”
The next sentences: I’ve only had it once in my life before when illness made me dehydrate while traveling overseas without access to fluids for 24 hours straight on an overnight bus ride from Guatemala City all the way back up into Mexico City (Oaxaca is 13 hours away by car). The doctor said that was caused by not drinking enough water.

And it’s been four years now since that time, but the question remains: why do I draw my feet together when I get tired?
I was diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome in 2012. It is a condition characterized by unpleasant sensations and feelings that cause someone to move their legs while resting or sitting for long periods of time.” – The sensation may be felt as an itch, burning, tingling feeling on the skin above one’s calves and behind the knees — which can lead to leg-jerking movements at night from trying to relieve them.
” – You’re not alone if you constantly feel like your toes are falling asleep,” says Dr. Maria Carmen Rodriguez Lopez, medical director at Drexel University’s Cidney Medical Center. “The condition can be chronic, lasting for many years.”
” – Dr. Lopez says the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome typically present in one or more of three phases: an initiating phase when someone first feels a sensation and tries to move their legs; then, the exacerbation phase where they will feel itchy or burning sensations that get worse if they do not keep moving; finally, there is a remission stage which may last anywhere from two hours to days at a time.”
Dr. Lopez recommends finding ways to relieve these uncomfortable feelings with non-pharmacological approaches such as getting massages, stretching your muscles before resting by sitting on the floor and leaning against a wall, wearing compression stockings, or taking a bath.

His professional advice for those looking into the causes and treatments for restless leg syndrome is: “If you’ve tried medication that didn’t work for you, don’t stop there because there are other things out there like massage therapy which may be more effective. In addition to this, one study showed using compression stockings helps 80% of people who suffer from RLS alleviate their symptoms. So if someone has not found anything else that works they should use compression stockings.”
“RLS sufferers may also find relief by using compression stockings.”
