why i left china

I left China for many reasons. I had been a resident of Shanghai for three years, and while I loved my time there, it was time to move on. This is my account of what motivated me to leave China and the lessons I learned from living abroad.

An American Expat’s Perspective on Leaving China

I’m not sure that everyone will agree with my decision to leave China, but it was something that I felt deep in my heart and mind. During these past six years living here, there have been many times when I’ve craved a less stressful society, like America or Canada for example. This feeling has increased steadily over time as Shanghai became more crowded with people and pollution while government regulations seemed to get more and more strict.

In the end, I decided it was time to move on and find other adventures. There are so many things I will miss about China however–the food is amazing, the people can be very kind-hearted when they’re not being too cynical (sarcasm doesn’t translate well), there’s an immense love of culture here that we don’t see in America or Canada, and I could go on. –__ __ _ | When you come back for visits though, you’ll always have a place to stay with me! We’ve got plenty of room here at our apartment complex as long as your travel buddy isn’t allergic to cats 😸🐱

What I’m most excited about is coming back to Canada and being able to walk around without feeling like a foreigner. Sometimes, when you’re living in an expat community it’s easy to forget that there are people who don’t have the same perspective on life as we do. It feels natural after so long–I feel at home here now for some reason even though I haven’t been away from my hometown this long since before college! __

In any case, China has given me many opportunities that were otherwise closed off to someone with just Canadian work experience or citizenship (especially if they weren’t willing to move abroad). But eventually all good things come to an end and it was time for me. __

It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve learned so much, but it’s time to go home. __

The post is about why the author left China. It starts out by stating that they are excited for their return to Canada because it will be like coming back to your hometown again after living abroad for too long–you start feeling at home there even if you’re not from there originally. They then talk about how China has given them many opportunities that were otherwise closed off due to nationality or citizenship (especially when moving outside of the country). However, all good things must come an end eventually–it was time for this writer to leave China behind and return home. The blog ends with explaining what they are excited for when they return to Canada, the things that will be different and how much they have learned. The post is about why the author left China.
