The 409 tonnage list is a popular resource for truckers to find out how much they can legally carry on their trucks. The information is organized by weight, tire size, and number of axles. Trucking companies use this list as guidance when it comes to loading the weight limit in order to prevent overloading or damaging their equipment.

There are three sections that go into detail about specific types of vehicles:

-Truckload carriers (provides load limits for Common Carrier Vehicles)

-Piece carrier’s/Owner Operator Vehicle (provides load limits for Owner Operators)

-Non-motorized vehicle carriers (vehicles with no motor power other than human powered). These include horse trailers, luggage carts for airports and shopping malls, tow trailers, etc.

There are also three types of axles:

-Single axle (one wheel touching the ground)

-Duel or Dual Axle (two wheels in contact with the ground)

-Triple Axle (three wheels in contact with the ground). Truckers can find tons per tire size as well. For example a tandem trailer would be around 45 ton maximum capacity but an 18/14 combination on single rear tires may carry up to 53 tons. The list includes weight limits for different amounts of axles as well so truckers know how much they can pull depending on how many axles their vehicle has. It is suggested that truck drivers should measure the weight of their truck before heading out as this will help them stay within limits.

-Triple Axis (three wheels in contact with the ground). Truckers can find tons per tire size and other information about different types of axles to make sure they are staying within local laws when hauling loads that may be heavier than what is allowed. For example a tandem trailer would have an approximate maximum capacity, but if you put 18/14 tires on your vehicle, then it could carry up to 53 tons. The list includes weight limits for different amounts of axles so drivers know how much they can pull depending on how many axles their vehicle has. It is suggested that truck drivers should measure the weight of their truck before heading out as this will help them stay within limits.

-Double Axle (two wheels in contact with the ground). You can find tons per tire size and other good information about different types of axles to make sure you are staying within local laws when hauling loads that may be heavier than what is allowed. For example a tandem trailer would have an approximate maximum capacity, but if you put 18/14 tires on your vehicle, then it could carry up to 53 tons. The list includes weight limits for different amounts of axles so drivers know how much they can pull based on how many axles their vehicle has.

-Single Axle (one wheel in contact with the ground). This list includes weight limits for different amounts of axles so drivers know how much they can pull based on how many axles their vehicle has. For example a single axle charge truck would have an approximate maximum capacity, but if you put 18/14 tires on your vehicle then it could carry up to 53 tons. The list also shows that this is not recommended as there are safety concerns and fines imposed by state law when loads exceed allowable limits, which means more time spent driving back and forth from one place to another while finding a safe place to unload heavy cargo or dangerous situations where vehicles get stuck without warning.

-Tandem Axle: 27,00 (each)

-Triple Axle: 45,960 (each)

-Quadruple Axle: 54,00 (each)

-Sixteen Wheel Combination(16): 68,380 (each)

*Weight in pounds (lbs.)

-Tandem Axle: 27,00 lbs. each

-Triple Axles 45,960 lbs. each

-Quadruple Axles 54,00 lbs. each

-Sixteen Wheel Combination(16): 68,380 lbs. each *Each axel has a maximum capacity of 11,700 which is what the total weight limit for this truck would be at max load and it must not exceed 80%. The more you know about your vehicle and how much cargo you can safely carry with its configuration will help prevent safety hazards as well as fines by law enforcement when loads are over allowable limits.”

“As an example if a single axle is a tandem axle the maximum load on that trailer would be 27,00 lbs. Maximum weight for this truck configuration at max load with no overage allowed is 54,00 lbs.”

“Tandem Axles: The gross vehicle weight of a tandam drive axles may not exceed 40,00 pounds; the distance between any two consecutive axles must not be less than 16 feet and more than 25 ft.; it has four wheels so each tire can carry up to 11700lbs.

Light duty trailers are often used as tow-behinds or pull-behinds where they follow behind other heavy vehicles such as tractor trucks (tractor trailers). Their typical construction consist of an open bed without sides and have low ground clearance. The weight of a light duty trailer is usually less than 44,00 pounds and can be towed by most vehicles.”

“The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for heavy-duty trailers ranges from 14,00 to 30,800 lbs with corresponding legal limits on the weights that may be carried within them. This rating reflects the combined weight which includes all cargo in any type of transport unit plus 12% allowance for buffer zone and driver’s personal items or equipment.”

Heavy Duty Trailers: Designated as Class A if carrying one axle load weighing more than 15,500 kgs; designated as Class B if carrying two axle loads weighing more than 11,250kgs each; designated as Class C if three or more axle loads weighing more than 11,250kgs each.

Light Duty Trailers: Designated as Class D if carrying one axle load weighing less than 15,500 kgs; designated as Class E if carrying two axle loads weighing less than 11,250 kg each.

“In Canada a light duty trailer is defined by Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) to be any vehicle with gross weight of 4400 kilograms or less.”

“A heavy-duty trailer can weigh up to 45 metric tonnes (44 imperial tons).” “Gross Vehicle Weight Rating GVWR – The combined weight which includes all cargo in any type of transport unit plus an allowance for 12% buffer zone and the driver’s weight. In Canada, the maximum gross weight rating for a light-duty trailer is 15500 kilograms.”

“Minimum GVW – The total of all axle loads (including load on any vehicle towed) which are less than or equal to the design carrying capacity for each axle.” “Maximum Load Rating MHR – Maximum rated cargo in pounds that can be carried by a specific vehicle under specified conditions without exceeding its Safe Working Capacity SWC.”

Rear Tandem Axle: Designated as Class B if two rear axles with one bearing more than 11,250 kgs; designated as C if three or more rear axles weighing more than 11,250kgs each.

Broadside Rear Tandem Axle: Designated as Class B if two rear axles with one bearing more than 11,250 kgs; designated as C if three or more rear axles weighing more than 11,250kgs each. Front Tandem Axle: Designated as Class A-B if two front axles with a weight not exceeding 2250 kgs and designed to carry the same load without unbalanced handling of vehicle ; designated by class C for any tandem axle that weighs in excess of 2250 kilograms but less than 2540 kilograms. The gross capacity must be within 12% buffer zone from design GVW rating which is calculated based on the curb weight plus driver’s weight multiplied by 0.12 + unit type weights (including an allowance
