You know you’ve got a shotgun with a good pattern when more than 50% of the pellets fired strike within a 30-inch circle at 40 yards.

A sufficient percentage of pellets is important for shooting game that’s far away, but not so far as to require slugs or rifle rounds.

some say that 40 yards is the minimum distance to pattern a shotgun. Others point out you can’t really be sure of your shot until it’s past 50 yards; but if you’re shooting at game like deer or ducks, which are typically between 30 and 300 feet away, then that should get close enough.

So what percentage of pellets in a circle does it take for us to consider them “patterned”? It seems there isn’t an exact number – from anecdotal evidence as well as research on the internet we found anywhere from 66% up to 80%. A little over half (or around 60%) seemed like more than many people would accept before calling their shotgun not properly patterned. There was no consensus among hunters or experts.
